Pro-tip: Getting the perfect fit for your wedding dress

1/30/2021

Pro-tip:  Wedding gowns are not like t-shirts. In fact the are unlike most of your regular clothing.  They are not designed to be worn right off the rack! Wedding dresses are special and intimate- they are meant to be tweaked and altered by a capable seamstress to achieve that perfect, “for you” fit for your perfect day.  Modest wedding gowns may need a few more adjustments than their strapless counterparts.  Everyone's arms are different, so if you want a wedding dress with sleeves, they may need to be adjusted a bit in order to fit your arms perfectly. Modest wedding dresses may also need to be adjusted through the shoulders or at the neckline to ensure that everything lays smoothly.   If you fall in love with a gown that needs a few minor adjustments do not worry, it is a common occurrence  and most bridal stores will have a capable seamstress who can take care of any tweaks for you.  We work with an incredible seamstress who has made hundreds of these minor and very commonly needed alterations, for brides who have purchased an Elizabeth Cooper Design gown.   She will even work with our brides who purchase their modest wedding gowns from ECD online!

Pro-Tip: Wedding gown shopping takes preparation!

Pro-tip: Come prepared for your appointment!
Browse Pinterest before you start in-store shopping. Check out the wedding gown brands and styles each bridal store offers  These days a majority of your wedding dress shopping can really be done online.

Decide which features matter most to you in a wedding gown. Identify the bridal shops that carry the the type of wedding dress that you want.  If you are not looking for a modest wedding gown with sleeves,  Elizabeth Cooper Design is definitely not a good option for you! We only offer our own designs and we specialize in modest gowns. We do not offer strapless or backless gowns, those can be purchased at many other bridal shops, so if that is what you like, look around and you will be able to find a place that offers those options. All Elizabeth Cooper Design wedding gowns have sleeves and modest necklines.  All of our wedding dresses offer full coverage in back as well.

Be prepared with ideas of wedding dress styles that you want to try- come with general concepts that you love, along with specific styles that are carried in the bridal shop that you are visiting. When you come to Elizabeth Cooper Design store in Utah you will be helped by a bridal consultant, and if you are not in Utah and need to meet via a virtual appointment, one of the designers will help you.  Either way, if you are prepared to share your wedding gown ideas with them, they can better help you get the look that you want!

It’s never too early to start doing research for your ideal wedding dress. The more educated you are about what is available, before you schedule time at bridal stores, the less stressful your shopping will be, happy shopping!

ECD Bride Olivia

Olivia chose the Aretha wedding dress for her special day.  The modest neckline and 3/4 length sleeves were perfect for her wedding day!
Where did you and your fiancé meet?
Jacob and I met at church during my official visit to the University of Mississippi. Although I don’t remember meeting him (and wouldn’t start college until two years later!), he claims that he instantly knew he would marry me!

How did he propose?
After church, Jacob and I went on a walk around the Ole Miss campus, just like any ordinary afternoon. He took me to the Paris-Yates Chapel, the place where he first told me he loved me, and proposed. It was just the two of us- a perfectly intimate moment!

Describe your wedding in 4 words:
Timeless, simple, elegant, and wintry!

What did you splurge on/save on?
It truly takes a village to throw a wedding. From dress alterations, to photography, to the desserts at the reception, our friends and family offered their talents and time. It definitely saved us a good bit of cash, but it was also so special to have all of our loved ones play a part in our wedding!

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
When Jacob and I were receiving our final blessing before being pronounced husband and wife, I remember the gravity of the moment, realizing that I was entering a covenant with both Jacob and the Lord. I told myself, “Remember this moment, even if the day goes by like a blur.” It was humbling and beautiful!

Any advice for future brides?
While weddings are fun to plan and exciting to think about, your marriage is ultimately the most important aspect of the day. Keep it simple! Cherish every moment.

Additional comments:
The moment I saw the Aretha gown, I knew it was the dress for me. Living in Mississippi, I thought it would be impossible for this dream to become a reality. However, I took the plunge, ordered the dress online, and had it delivered all the way to Mississippi. I never even tried on another wedding gown. It truly was the dress of my dreams. My wedding was small, simple, and inexpensive, but my wedding dress is truly a priceless treasure. Thank you, Elizabeth Cooper Design!

Pro-Tip: Try On That Wedding Gown!

Wedding gowns take a bit of effort to put on, especially wedding dresses with sleeves.  When trying on modest wedding gowns you will need some help getting in and out of them.  At Elizabeth Cooper Design we will give you as much privacy as possible, but at times our bridal consultants must be in the dressing room with you.  They will lace up the corset of each wedding dress that you choose to try on, to make sure that you are getting the best fit possible.

Any guests that you bring to the appointment should plan to remain seated outside of the dressing room while you put on each wedding gown.  Taking this approach helps us select the right sizes, and protect the wedding gowns so they are fresh and undamaged. It also gives you a fun opportunity to make a grand entrance with each wedding dress!

Wearing white or nude colored under garments to your bridal appointment will make it easier to visualize how you will look in your gown on your big day.  Though the bodice and skirts of our modest wedding dresses are always fully lined and cannot be seen through, dark or brightly colored underwear will cause the overlaying fabrics to appear to be different shades than other parts of the wedding gown, which can be distracting.

Bring heels similar in height to the ones you intend to wear on your wedding day, so that you can get an accurate idea of the proper gown length you will need.

Do your hair similarly to the way you think you will wear it for the wedding.  It is easier to visualize yourself in “the gown” when you are done up the way you plan to be on your special day. However, go easy on the makeup, especially foundation or concealers, as well as blush and lipstick, since those can easily get on wedding gowns when you’re changing in and out.

Whether you come alone, or bring a couple of guests to your appointment, plan to try on several of our modest wedding dresses and enjoy yourself!
